Indians overseas and those within will do well by partnering with the world communities to evolve Bharat as a developed country and reclaim the status of ‘Vishwa guru’

Every year January 9 is celebrated as Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas recognizing the contributions of Overseas Indians to Bharat and global communities. This is also the day when Mahatma Gandhi returned from Africa in the midst of the fight against the imperialistic British rule in the country.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas also acknowledges the extensive and positive influence that Indians overseas have had across different spheres viz., economy, literature, politics, social activity, among others. The day is marked on the calendar by the Indian government and is celebrated once in two years.

This year marks 18th edition of Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas convention being held in the vibrant city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha during January 8 – 10. Over 5000 delegates from 50 countries are part of this congregation. The largest overseas Indians meet is also an occasion to strategize on ‘Diaspora’s Contribution to Viksit Bharat’. Christine Carla Kangaloo, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago was roped in as chief guest.

With over 35 million Indians residing in about 200 countries, diaspora plays a crucial role in linking Bharat with the international community. It represents the largest diaspora globally, embodying more than just individuals who have emigrated; it is a vibrant force influencing both the world and future of Bharat.

From influential figures in Silicon Valley to policymakers in London, healthcare professionals in the Middle East to students in Australia form part of this huge global force to reckon with, Indian diaspora embodies not only the narrative of migration but throws up ample opportunities for collaboration, innovation and shared advancement.

Their contribution through remittances, investments and enhancement of Bharat’s global standing is unparalleled. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is also a forum to foster collaboration for collective growth and development. This event serves as a platform for the Indian diaspora to reconnect with their roots, promote unity and a common vision through shared experiences, challenges and movement forward. It brings together NRIs and PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin) from around the world and contribute to Bharat’s advancement. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for Bharat to showcase its achievements and prospects to a global audience.

During the Pravasi event, a clutch of activities including seminars, exhibitions and award ceremonies take place. Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to welfare of the Indian community abroad or to Bharat’s development. Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas is a celebration of lasting connection between Bharat and its diaspora.

Economic Contributions

Economic influence of Indian diaspora on Bharat is considerable. One of the primary channels through which the diaspora impacts the Indian economy is through remittances. As per World Bank data, India consistently ranks as top recipient of remittances globally receiving over $ 87 billion in 2021 and approximately $129 billion in 2024. India also accounted for 14.3 per cent global remittances in 2024 marking the highest share Description: Text Box 1ever. These funds not only provide critical support to families but also promote economic growth by enabling investments in education, healthcare and infrastructure.

Diaspora actively contributes to Bharat’s development by promoting trade and business collaborations. Entrepreneurs, professionals and business leaders from diaspora have established successful enterprises in Bharat, creating jobs, enhancing technology transfer and bolstering entrepreneurial ecosystem. Diaspora plays a pivotal role in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), leveraging their global business networks to connect Bharat with international markets.

Technology and Education

Contributions of the Indian diaspora to advancements in technology and education are huge. Numerous Indians residing abroad have emerged as leaders in various sectors including technology, medicine, engineering, and space science. Notable figures like Sundar Pichai (Google CEO) and Satya Nadella (Microsoft CEO), to name a few, exemplify the success of the Indian diaspora on the international stage. Their accomplishments serve as an inspiration for millions of Indians, particularly the youth, encouraging them to pursue education and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Diaspora has facilitated educational partnerships between Indian and global institutions, enhancing Bharat’s stature in the realm of higher education. “Pravasi Bharatiya Divas” brings together professionals, scientists and entrepreneurs of Indian descent to explore strategies for enhancing Bharat’s technological and educational landscape. Additionally, various philanthropic endeavours by the diaspora have provided funding for educational institutions, research projects and scholarships in Bharat, thereby improving access to quality education for underprivileged students. Recent example is the launch of “Kisan App”, a platform developed by Priya & Arun, software engineers that link Indian farmers to international markets. The initiative not only empowered farmers but showcased how the diaspora could drive transformative change in Bharat.

Society and Culture

Diverse traditions, languages, festivals and artistic forms of Bharat have been embraced by millions globally, instilling a sense of pride within the diaspora. Through various cultural events, exhibitions and performances, they showcase Bharat’s diversity and heritage, thereby enhancing bilateral relations between India and other countries.

Numerous members of the Indian diaspora have been instrumental in supporting charitable organizations and not for profit endeavours that address critical issues like poverty alleviation, healthcare access, sanitation and women empowerment.

Politics & Diplomacy

Indians living abroad actively engage in democratic processes of their host nations and facilitate diplomatic relations between Bharat and these countries. This growing political influence of the Indian diaspora has led to improved understanding and cooperation with nations such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and various Gulf States.

Notable individuals of Indian descent, such as Rishi Sunak (former UK Prime Minister), Chandrikapersad Santokhi (Suriname President), Mohammed Irfaan Ali (Guyana President), and Navin Ramgoolam (Prime Minister of Mauritius), exemplify how the political involvement of Indian diaspora enhances Bharat’s global stature.

Pravasi Bharatiyas have consistently been instrumental in shaping the narrative surrounding Bharat’s development. Their influence on “Viksit Bharat” is profound and will continue to play a pivotal role in steering Bharat’s evolution as a global leader. As Bharat progresses in its quest for growth and advancement, participation of the Indian diaspora in fostering economic development, technological innovation, social progress and cultural exchange will be vital.

By effectively harnessing the potential of its diaspora, Bharat can tackle its challenges and emerge as a prosperous, innovative and inclusive nation. With the collective efforts of both domestic and international Indians, Bharat is well-positioned to achieve its goal of becoming “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.
